pilgrimages and parades

Friday evening I leave with some brothermans to go to St. Herman of Alaska Monastery in Platina, CA. We are going to spend a couple of days at the Monastery and for the 25th Anniversary of the repose of Blessed Hieromonk Seraphim (Rose.)

This afternoon I learned that while I am away I will be missing my dear wife and our oldest son’s participation in the Walla Walla Frontier Days parade on Saturday. They will be skating/parading with the Walla Walla Skate Park Assoc. peoples.

If you are going to be in the Walla Walla area this Saturday; go on down to the parade and give my wife and son some moral support. Thanks!

-Parade start time: 10:00 a.m.
-Parade route: Starts at 5 th & Alder, travels downtown Walla Walla, then East to Palouse, North to Main, then West on 5 th.

And if you should think about it… please keep us in your prayers.

Elder Serafim Rose is one of the most popular spiritual authors in Russia today. I saw his icon in many homes, and it seemed that everyone had read “Orthodoxy and the Religion of the Future”. His connection with the rather singular (to say the least) Gleb Podmoshensky was unfortunate, but it does not diminish the fact that Elder Serafim was one of the greatest podvizhniki of the 20th century in any country.

Indeed, if it were not for his sad association with Mr Podmoshensky, he would have been glorified a saint officially by the Church by now. There are only two other figures to compare with him in the history of the American mission in the last century, and they are Archbishop St John Maksimovich the Wonderworker and Metropolitan Philaret Voznesensky the Confessor. I am humbled to realise that I met all three (NO! I was no friend of any of them, I only met them as part of a group! Indeed, I was only a young child when I saw Vladyki John.).

I look forward to the day when we can paint an icon of the Three Holy American Confessors, and have a special feast for them (as we do for the Three Holy Hierarchs St Basil, St Gregory, and St John Chrysostom).
